A Bit About the Brand

“World’s Finest CBD Infused Products” is the tagline of Lord Jones, a Los Angeles-based CBD brand that is devoted to producing industry leading products with attention to detail, transparency, and an aesthetic that evokes luxury and celebrity.

As the company states on its website, “the inspiration for Lord Jones was simple – we wanted to create a CBD brand we wished we could buy as consumers.”

Lord Jones also states “we wanted the product to be so well formulated and packaged that it could sit on a department store beauty counter or on the shelf at an artisan confectionery.”

That said, the company provides no actual names and dates — or faces — to put to the story of the brand or its founding.

Lord Jones sells a wide range of CBD products, ranging from skin care to bath salts, confections, tinctures, gel capsules, and apparel. Lord Jones is also a board member and part of the Executive Committee for the US Hemp Roundtable.

The company projects not only an image of luxury and prestige, but also positions itself in the celebrity world, including by sponsoring a partnership with Equinox, the LA fitness center popular with celebrities like Khloe Kardashian and Kanye West.

Materials, Ingredients and Manufacturing Process

Lord Jones uses CO2 extraction to create broad or full spectrum hemp extracts rich in phytocannabinoids and terpenes

The company uses only what it describes as “select domestically cultivated hemp,” and its products are produced in line with Good Manufacturing Practices, according to the brand’s website. Lord Jones doesn’t provide much specifics about the cultivation process, only that “our hemp grower/processor is located in the United States and uses Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) throughout their supply chain and utilizes sustainable non-GMO farming practices. The growers compost their fields in off-growing months to establish proper soil regeneration.” They do not actually have a GMP certificate, however.

Throughout the manufacturing process, the products are tested four times by independent third party ISO certified labs. The testing is performed on dried hemp plant, hemp extract, bulk (product after infusion), and finished goods, according to Lord Jones.

Lord Jones’ skincare products are not tested on animals and are free of formaldehyde, parabens, phthalates, synthetic deyes, sulfates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, animal-derived ingredients, and alcohol.

The tinctures contain natural oils and are sweetened with stevia, while the gumdrops use sugar, glucose, gelatin, citric aid, and natural fruit colors and flavors. Sugar and glucose are used in a number of the products as sweeteners, including the dark chocolate espresso chews and the gumdrops.  All of the products are gluten free.

The ingredients for all of Lord Jones’ products can easily be found on the company website

Pros and cons of Lord Jones

  • Luxurious and unique products
  • Extensive product lineup
  • Tasty edibles
  • Very expensive

Packaging & Branding

Lord Jones has a sort of “luxury-apothecary/chocolate-maker-for-the-stars” aesthetic that comes through in every page of the brand’s website and in their social media accounts.

The gumdrops come in little square boxes that seem colored for pairing with a Le Creuset cookware set, and it almost looks like they were designed for the possibility that at the last second this CBD company might start selling jewelry instead.

On Lord Jones’ products, customers will find the brand’s seal and/or Jones family crest. It has a shield, bookended by two stags and topped by what looks like a peregrine falcon standing on a crown. Picture a hunting lodge that sells CBD, if it was designed by Wes Anderson.

The company definitely appears to be marketing itself at the more upscale CBD customer, not only with its aesthetic but also with the media blurbs it features online. There’s the one article that refers to its “Mandy Moore-approved CBD lotion,” and an article from the New York Times featuring Olivia Wilde praising Lord Jones’ products, to name just two.

Also, there are the relatively high prices ($95 for capsules, $100 for oil, $75 for a pack of 9 gumdrops),  which says something about the customer base Lord Jones is looking to attract.

Beyond that though, the company also appears to put a real premium on community approach, by way of special discounts for medical personnel, teachers, and military personnel.

Transparency & Lab Results

Lord Jones’ products are tested four separate times by third party labs before they hit the shelves.

The third party testing reports can be found on Lord Jones’ website by providing the batch code of a particular item purchased. The PDFs of the lab results include a highly-detailed breakdown of the tests, including the cannabinoid and terpene profile down to the milligram, as well as testing for pesticides, microbials, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and residual solvents.

A sample test can be seen here.

While Lord Jones does pride itself on its third party testing and transparency, it would have been nice to get a little more detail about their supply chain. We do not know, for example, where its hemp supplier is located or what type of certifications they have.

For the sake of transparency (not to mention branding and image), the company could also consider providing details about its founding and the people who stand behind the products.

Customer Service

Customers who need support can click on a support button on Lord Jones’ website, where they will be prompted to fill out their details and the subject of their query. There is also a contact page and a very extensive FAQ section that provides a lot of information.

In addition, the easy to search third party lab results serve as an easy source of information to users.

Other than that though, the company doesn’t have the same scope of customer service options as many of its competitors.

The Bottom Line

Lord Jones is an aspirational CBD company that brings a certain modicum of prestige and polished, artisan aesthetics to the world of cannabidiol wellness products. All of the products appear to be made with care (which is also reflected in the price) and a real attention to detail.

Lord Jones also performs third party testing which is accessible online, though it would probably behoove them to provide more details about the manufacturing process as well as the management of the company and how they came to develop Lord Jones.
