General Information About the Product

Mary’s Nutritionals Muscle Freeze is a CBD-infused topical that can be applied to any area of the body. It comes in two sizes: 1.5oz with 75mg of CBD ($35) or a 3oz with 200mg of CBD ($75).

With a name like “Muscle Freeze,” consumers can infer that this product’s intended use is to soothe sore muscles or aid muscle recovery. But Mary’s cannot make these kinds of blatant claims – so they don’t. Instead, according to the brand’s website, “this plant-based topical cream is infused with full-spectrum hemp extract containing naturally occurring CBD, wholesome mango butter and cooling menthol to create an exhilarating experience when applied to the skin.”

The product, which comes in a pump, has a gel-like consistency, rather than a cream or balm. It was very easy to apply, but took a minute to actually absorb into my skin – so be careful with your clothing. That said, the product was not greasy. I also found it to be very moisturizing. With this product, a little goes a long way, so you will probably want to use it sparingly (a quarter of a dose is enough). At $35, this means there is great value and the product will last a long time.

How to Use this Product

The instructions on the box are to “apply generously over affected area and sore muscles every 2-4 hours as needed. Do not use on broken skin or open wounds.”

I applied the gel directly to my skin in a few areas and immediately felt a cooling sensation – likely due to the menthol. I liked this, since I knew exactly where the gel had been applied. But the cooling sensation was very intense, and the product has a very strong smell, which I found to be overpowering.

I should mention that I had to reapply after an hour or two, since any sensation I experienced seemed to wear off very quickly. I also applied the gel to my daughter’s legs after her soccer game.

Interestingly, the additional ingredients are not listed anywhere on the website, but they are listed on the packaging as:

Transparency & Lab Results

The official lab results can be downloaded directly from the brand’s website. Consumers can simply select their batch number from a drop-down menu, and click on the “Download our Official Lab Results” button. Unfortunately, it is not possible  to review the lab results before purchasing – only once the product has arrived will you know your batch number.

Actually, the particular batch number of the product I ordered is not available, so I was unable to see the lab results. I opened a Zen Desk inquiry, but have not heard back.

Until recently, Mary’s provided a “Potency Report” for the CBD cultivated by Elite Botanicals in Colorado. Newer batches of this product are reviewed by Botanacor Laboratories – a leading national industrial Hemp and CBD testing laboratory.

Mary’s uses industrial hemp-derived products produced from 100% organic plants grown on the Elite Botanicals farm in Loveland, Colorado. They use organically cultivated, US Produced, Pesticide Free, Clinically Tested, Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil. Consumers can search for a CoA (Certificate of Analysis) through their website as well by entering your Batch ID into a search bar.

Update: I emailed Mary’s to ask for the lab results for the batch that I purchased, and received a response two days later from a Customer Service Manager with the correct lab results attached. She also promised to upload them to the site ASAP.

About the Brand

Mary’s Nutritionals is the hemp-based CBD brand subsidiary of Mary’s Medicinals, which was founded in 2013 by Lynn Honderd in Colorado. Mary’s has a few other brands as well, including: Mary’s Methods (a hemp-extract based line of premium skincare products); and Mary’s Tails (which includes many of the same products sold under the Nutritionals line, but formulated to be safe for pets).

Most known for their transdermal patches (a technology for which they hold several patents), Mary’s offers several topical products.

Consumer Experience

Overall, the consumer experience was positive. I was able to order the product online, and it was delivered within a few days.

There were, however, a few confusing issues regarding the ordering process. Originally, I saw this product on marysmedicinals.com, where it is described as a “cannabis extract.”  The product is further marketed as follows: “say goodbye to unwanted aches and pains with Mary’s Muscle Freeze. The infused topical combines CBD and other whole-plant nutrients to provide quick pain relief and a soothing, cooling effect. The ingredients are listed as: full spectrum cannabis extract with naturally occurring CBD, massage oil, and menthol. It is not clear what is in the “massage oil.”

This product by Mary’s Medicinals is not available online and can be purchased through licensed dispensaries in states where medical or recreational cannabis is legal. For this, you can use their store locator. If consumers do want to purchase “a similar CBD product” product online, they are then taken to the Mary’s Nutritionals site. This process was slightly confusing, although not a major deterrent as a consumer.

Branding, Packaging and the Unboxing Experience

“The branding is beautiful, so this is something I would be able to give to a friend or family member, which I really like to do with hemp and hemp extracts.”

I found the sleek, minimalist, black-and-white branding very attractive. I can give this product as a gift, and it looks great on my vanity.  I liked the fact that the packaging materials are recyclable.

I also liked that the dosage and ingredients were clearly articulated on the package, although I felt that a QR scannable lab result was missing. Consumers will need to go back on the website to access the CoA.

Nice, sleek, black-and-white packaging.

What I loved

“My husband liked it too, and I even used it on my daughter’s legs after her soccer practice.”

What I liked most about the Muscle Freeze by Mary’s Nutritionals are its active ingredients, clear dosage instructions, and that the effects were as expected. In addition to its desired effects, the product also left my skin feeling well moisturized.

What I didn’t love

“I needed to re-apply it after an hour or two – it didn’t work for terribly long.”

Although I am a fan of the terpene profile of eucalyptus, camphor, and menthol, I felt the scent of this product was overpowering. If you want to clear your sinuses as well as your inflammation, this might be the product for you. Another downside is that the product did not work for very long, and I had to reapply after one hour. Compared to similar products I have used, this felt short.

Bottom Line & Main Takeaways

Overall, I really enjoyed Mary’s Nutritionals Muscle Freeze and would order it again or give it as a give. This product hits all the topical nails on the head: it’s affordable, it does what it’s supposed to do, and it’s made from US-grown hemp. These are all important points for me to consider when choosing a wellness product for me and my family. I really felt this product offers great value for its price point.
