Papa & Barkley
General Information About the Product
Papa & Barkley’s Releaf Balm is a cannabis-infused salve made with full-spectrum CBD oil and a range of other natural ingredients. This is the brand’s flagship product, originally formulated by founder, Adam Grossman, to treat his own father’s back pain.
The Releaf Balm comes in two sizes: 15ml (180mg of CBD) and 50ml (600mg of CBD). It is a targeted topical formula that is meant to address inflammation, minor pain, acute aches, sore joints, muscles, and post-workout recovery. This balm has a nice warming and cooling sensation and a nice scent.
How to Use This Product
This product is simple to use: apply one nickel-sized scoop of the balm to your skin and then gently massage it over the affected area until it has completely absorbed. Papa & Barley recommends doing this three or more times daily as needed. Personally, I felt this product should come with a scoop or some sort of application tool. I also think that the amount needed differs depending on which part of the body requires relief: I will need more for my knee than my elbow or wrist, for example.
Generally, this product takes approximately 15 minutes to start taking effect, although each user may have a slightly different experience. The jar should be stored in a cool to room temperature environment.
I play basketball and have some elbow issues, so I used the Releaf Balm pretty consistently for about two weeks. I established a good routine, applying once in the morning, once midday after a workout, and once before bed. I felt an almost instant relief because of the tingly sensation (like an icy hot).
With CBD what we are really after, though, is long-term relief. For that, you have to be consistent and keep using the product. I recommend using the whole jar before judging whether it worked for you or not, as I did.
This is a truly natural product with high quality ingredients and raw materials. The balm is made from coconut oil and beeswax, and then infused with CBD, Vitamin E and an essential oil blend of eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lavender, and peppermint.
Coconut oil is the main ingredient. It is a natural moisturizer and contains antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. The beeswax aids natural healing and cell development, without clogging pores.
The other ingredients include benefits such as:
- Eucalyptus: immune-boosting, helps purify the skin, and alleviates exhaustion
- Tea tree oil: antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, reduces redness and provides relief for minor muscular aches and pains
- Lavender: reduces stress, improves mood, and promotes a restful sleep
- Peppermint: a natural antiseptic, cleanses the skin, and alleviates inflammation and swelling
- Vitamin E: helps support the immune system, cell function, and skin health
Papa & Barkley is not only concerned about the quality of their CBD, but also takes great care to ensure all raw materials are sourced from high quality vendors and farmers.
Transparency & Lab Results
Papa & Barkley is seemingly one of the most transparent CBD brands on the market. The website goes into extensive detail about the entire manufacturing process from A-Z (or as the company puts it, “from soil to shelf.”)
Papa & Barkley tests each product a minimum of three times, a process, which is more rigorous than federal and state required testing procedures. Papa & Barkley tests for 66 pesticides, 5 microbials, and 10 residual solvents.
- Cannabis input is tested for cannabinoid and terpene content, pesticides, and heavy metals.
- Infused oil is tested a second time for quality assurance on cannabinoid and terpene profile.
- The Blended content is tested for a third time, ensuring a clean product and final consistency of cannabinoid content.
Papa & Barley runs three tests on each batch. First, organic cannabis is tested for cannabinoid and terpene content, pesticides, and heavy metals, confirming the quality of the hemp flowers before the infusion begins. The CBD is extracted directly from hemp flowers grown in the US. Papa & Barkley does not add solvents or harsh chemicals, but adds the hemp to a base oil (MCT) to prepare it for infusion and then adds heat, pressure, and water.
Next, the oil is tested for pesticides and heavy metals, along with cannabinoid and terpene content, before blending it with the beeswax and the essential oils.
The blended content is then tested to ensure final consistency before the bottles are filled. Lastly, the finished product is tested by a third party, CannaSafe, for potency, terpes, pesticides, residual solvents, microbials, and mycotoxins.

Pros and Cons of Papa & Barkley's Releaf Cream
The Papa & Barkley consumer experience was excellent from start to finish. I ordered this product easily online and it was delivered within days. I immediately received a survey to my email, asking about my experience with the product. I now receive frequent emails from the brand that are informative and interesting, as well as coupons and discount offers for their products.
With this product, a little goes a long way. For $30, it is a great value. If you are not completely satisfied with your product you can return it within 30 days to get 100% of your money back.
Packaging and the Unboxing Experience
Papa & Barkley’s packaging conveys a natural product that can be used by men and women of all ages. The Releaf Balm comes in a nice simple jar with a wooden top, which gives it an apothecary feel.
Interestingly, the brand just changed its labels, which used to read “Hemp Infused Balm” to now read “CBD Full Spectrum Cannabis Sativa (Hemp).” This is likely a marketing decision, as CBD has become increasingly mainstream.
What I loved
I really loved this product, all around. Mostly, I loved the scent and the ingredients. I enjoyed the warming and cooling sensation that I felt on my skin. I also really appreciate the amount of detail and information that Papa & Barkley provides on its process and ingredients.
What I didn’t love
As I mentioned, I think this product should come with a spoon or other applicator so that users don’t have to apply the balm with their fingers and guess the right amount. Another issue I had with the product is that it came with lots of plastic packaging, which was strange considering their emphasis on sustainability and nature.
Bottom Line & Main Takeaways
This is a great product by a great brand. I would definitely recommend the Releaf Balm and would be interested to try other products by Papa & Barley.
