The Bottom Line
The growing number of CBD Pet products on the market clearly indicate a growing trend. More and more pet owners are jumping on board, using CBD to treat their four-legged family member’s anxiety, depression, insomnia, seizures, joint pain, and skin conditions.
But does it work?
Mark Verdino, MD, Senior VP and Chief of Veterinary Staff at North Shore Animal League (the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization) recently told HuffPost “we don’t know, but they seem to be less reactive to low level pain stimuli, for example arthritis and things like that, when they take the product. And certain anxieties, they seem less reactive to certain things.”
Itay Ben-Mordechai, Head of Innovation at the Israeli-based and Gour Medical-owned Weedley, is enthusiastic and optimistic about CBD for pets. In a recent interview, Ben-Mordechai provided a range of anecdotal evidence, including a horse whose nervous skin condition improved after just two weeks of taking CBD, following two years of unsuccessful steroid treatments. Weedley is also launching a clinical study to assess the efficacy of CBD in the treatment of osteoarthritic dogs, coming on the tails of a 2018 study published by Cornell University that showed administration of 2mg/kg of CBD oil twice daily can safely decrease pain and increase activity in affected canines
Tips for treating your pet with CBD
- Make sure to use pet-safe CBD products only. Products meant for human consumption likely include a range of ingredients that may be harmful to animals.
- Size matters. If you have a small pet, make sure to use the appropriate dosage. Pay close attention to the dosage and start off by introducing small amounts to assess their reaction and gauge the effectiveness.
- Ask your veterinarian. Of course, it is always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian before giving CBD to your pet.
